Irish Air Corps Called In To Assist In Tackling Burren Fire

The Irish Air Corps has assisted the Clare Fire Service in dealing with a large scrub fire in the Burren National Park.

Firefighters were called to the scene, near Carran, before midday yesterday, and did not return to base until after midnight.

The area is inaccessible by vehicles so fire service personnel had to make their way to the fire on foot across difficult terrain, and the Irish Air Corps provided a helicopter to drop water onto the blaze, as it had spread over a significant area.

Meanwhile, fire crews from Scarriff, along with their colleagues from Borrisokane and Ballinasloe, Loughrea and Portumna, all attended a blaze which affected bogland and forestry in the Ballyshurle area of Co. Galway.

A red alert has been issued for this weekend as a result of an extreme fire risk, following on from the recent dry and warm weather.
