An investigation has been launched following the discovery of a body off the coast of Clare.
The body, believed to be that of a woman was recovered from the sea at the Cliffs of Moher yesterday evening.
The alarm was raised at around 5 o’clock yesterday evening, when emergency services were alerted to a person in the water at the Cliffs of Moher.
The body was reported to be close to the shoreline, at the base of the cliffs, south of O’Brien’s Tower.
The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was dispatched to the scene as well as the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115.
A body, believed to be that of a woman, was recovered from the water by Coast Guard volunteers, shortly after 6 o'clock and taken to the coastguard base at Doolin.
The body was later tranferred to University Hospital Limerick, where a post mortem examination is due to be carried out later today.
A Garda investigation into the incident is now underway. No formal identification has yet been made.
