Emergency services were alerted around 11 o'clock this morning after a council worker discovered a body in the River Fergus at the barrage.
Search and rescue volunteers from Mallow, who were providing a safety boat in the area, recovered the body of a woman from the water a short time later.
The body has since been transferred to University Hospital Limerick for a post mortem examination.
No formal identification has yet been made.
