Intensive Lobbying Ahead Of Vote On Northern Distributor Road

In all, 13 Councillors spoke against the Limerick Northern Distributur Road, joining residents who say it will be bad for the communities of Parteen, Ardnacrusha and Clonlara.

Councillors called for an alternative route to be put forward but were advised by council officials that all other options have already been explored and that they should bear the benefits in mind.

CEO Tom Coughlan advised councillors that they were being tasked with "the most important decision" facing Clare's local representatives in recent history given the economic benefits of the new route.

However, speaking on Clare FM's Morning Focus, Chairman of the Northern Distributor Concerned Residents group Ed English argued that improving the existing road network there would be just as effective.

The vote on the road will be held on Friday of next week, but the deferral has disappionted one ardent opponent of the project.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe feels that nothing of any consequence will happen over the next ten days.

However, as a decision is now in sight, with residents from Parteen, Clonlara and Ardnacrusha hope the issue will be resolved soon, and in their favour.
