Intensive Care Consultant Expects Rise In COVID Hospital Admissions In Midwest Over Next 4 Weeks

A leading Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine believes a rise in COVID admissions at University Hospital Limerick is inevitable over the coming weeks.

Dr Catherine Motherway has described the recent growth in transmission rates as worrying, saying it was clear that something had to give, to regain control of the spread of the virus.

The number of confirmed COVID cases at the region’s main hospital has dropped by 1 to 12 today, while there is 1 patient being treated for the virus in intensive care.

Plans are in place to deal with various scenarios once the winter surge takes hold and Dr Motherway is hopeful that the opening of the 60-bed modular unit at Dooradoyle will ease pressure on the system over the coming months.

She’s urging people not to panic and believes there is hope, but she insists it’s in the hands of ordinary people to ensure the hospital system isn’t overwhelmed.
