Irish Water has confirmed it will begin investigation works into addressing persistent sewage issues in Ballycannon Heights in Meelick from next week.

There have been persistent issues with odours emanating from the treatment plant at the back of the estate since it was developed more than 30 years ago.

The utility is to begin examining where new pipes will be laid in the area, after which it’s due to design a new sewerage pump station for Ballycannon, though full construction will not begin until 2022.

While no timeline has been put on the completion of the work, Ballycannon resident Majella Sheehan says it’s been long overdue.

Statement from Ballycannon

Irish Water, working with Clare County Council, is progressing with site investigation works as part of the planned upgrade to the existing wastewater infrastructure in Ballycannon, Co. Clare. This project will ensure that there is adequate treatment of wastewater, for now and into the future, as well as protecting human health and safeguarding the environment.

The project plans to construct a new sewage pumping station, replacing the existing wastewater treatment infrastructure. A new sewer will also be constructed to transfer the flows from Ballycannon to the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant in Limerick City. These works will be subject to statutory requirements such as planning permission, land acquisition, appropriate assessment and road opening licences.

Site Investigation works will take place next week and will include a couple of slit trenches on the main road and on the green area to the south of Ballycannon Heights These works will be used to identify the preferred option to deliver the upgrade works. These preliminary works will be carried out by EPS on behalf of Irish Water and will take place over two days.

Subject to statutory consents such as planning and land acquisition it is expected that construction works will commence in 2022.
