A new wastewater treatment plant in Ballyvaughan has been hailed as “a new dawn” for the region.

Uisce Eireann has been granted approval by Clare County Council for the construction of a new wastewater treatment facility on a 1.2 hectare site in the North Clare village subject to twelve conditions.

The region has previously been plagued with pollution issues, having been identified by the EPA in 2021 as one of five areas in the county that discharged raw sewage into seas and rivers every day.

Lisdoonvarna Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy has been telling Clare FM’s Seán Lyons the news will come as a relief to tourism-dependent businesses who have suffered financially due to poor water quality.
