The number of elderly people suffering abuse has seen a rise of 7 per cent in the last year.
The Health Service Executive has published a review of the Elder Abuse Services for 2012 which shows that psychological abuse remains the number one form of mistreatment towards older people at 36 per cent, while financial abuse follows at 25 per cent.
The report shows that in nearly 50 per cent of the cases a son or daughter is the alleged perpetrator.
