Illegal Dumping Complaints To Clare County Council Down 50% Last Month

The number of complaints issued to Clare County Council’s Waste Enforcement Team fell by almost 50% last month.

It comes as the local authority has secured over €90,000 in funding under a new anti-dumping initiative.

So far this year, Clare County Council has received 477 complaints relating to illegal dumping, littering and dog fouling.

In January there was 125, the worst month of the year, followed by 113 in March, however the figures are beginning to level off, with just 50 complaints recorded here in May.

As part of efforts to cut down on illegal waste disposal last month, the local authority in conjunction with An Garda Siochána held two multi-agency checkpoints on the N85.

Additionally, inspections were carried out at eight waste disposal sites, with two of these arising from public complaints and ultimately four warning letters were issued.

The local authority also issued seven fines for littering in May after receiving the same number of complaints,

There were, however, 26 pollution complaints in Clare last month, more than double the 10 recorded in April.

Clare County Council has since secured €93,000 under the Anti-Dumping Initiative, which it says will be spent on Mattress Amnesty days, Clean-ups, and Education Awareness Campaigns.
