IFI Convicts Two Men For Illegal Salmon Netting On The River Fergus

Inland Fisheries Ireland has convicted two men for an illegal netting incident in which three Atlantic salmon died.

Mr Tom Corry and Mr Flan Considine, both from Clarecastle, were observed by IFI officers setting four illegal salmon nets across the River Fergus in Ennis on the night of June 9th this year.

Wild salmon are critically endangered in Ireland with their stocks having dropped by 86% since 1971.

Mr Corry was fined €200 and Mr Considine was fined €100 while both were ordered to pay costs of €615 each in relation to the offence.

In addition, a boat seized by IFI officers on the night of the incident was forfeited as a result of the conviction.
