IFA Calls For Improved Rural Security

The Irish Farmers Association has called for a stronger focus on measures to improve rural security, following the case of a Clare pensioner who fled his home after it was twice targeted by thieves.

An Ennis District Court hearing regarding robberies at the home of Cree bacheler Michael McMahon received national attention after it emerged that the now 66-year-old left his home and cycled 30 miles through the night to check into a nursing home in Ennis.

Speaking on Clare FM’s Morning Focus today, new IFA President Eddie Downey called for stronger sentences for those who rob vulnerable people, as well as initiatives to re-assure those in rural areas that they are safe.
