Hyde Park Bombing Trial Collapses

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has accepted full responsibility for failures leading to the collapse of the prosecution against a West Clare native accused of the Hyde Park bombing in 1982.

Four members of the Household Cavalry were killed in the attack and John Downey with an address in Donegal but originally from Saint Joseph's Terrace in Kilrush was standing trial accused of their murders.

However, the case was thrown out after the judge was told about a deal granting him immunity.

John Downey received a letter of assurance in 2007 saying he was not wanted, but a judge says the PSNI knew the Metropolitan police wanted to arrest him.
