HSE Reviews Finds Shortcomings In Maternity Care

A HSE review of maternity services has highlighted a lack of compassion and dignity being shown to patients.

The report reviewed 203 complaints about maternity care over the past 40 years.

Most of the complaints relate to the Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise and others involve eight more hospitals, including Galway and Limerick.

Parents complained of a lack of communication around their care, while some felt they hadn’t been treated with dignity or respect.

The report carries a number of recommendations, including updating training in maternity units every 2 years, maintaining CTG monitoring equipment in good condition and improving communication.
