HSE Insists New UHL 96-Bed Block “Safely and Properly” Staffed

The CEO of the HSE insists the new 96-bed block at the region’s main hospital is “safely and properly staffed”.

The first of three planned 96-bed blocks at University Hospital Limerick has been officially opened, increasing inpatient bed capacity in real terms by 71 to 650.

The €105 million project is the most costly development delivered by the HSE in 2025 and comes a week after planning permission was granted for a second such facility.

Bernard Gloster says the organisation is “not in the business” of opening new beds without having the required staffing.
