There were 55 people classified as homeless in Clare at the end of January according to the Department of Housing.

It’s a significant drop from the number of 75 in the same month last year and 73 the year prior, before the onset of the pandemic.

However, the Midwest region as a whole, which includes Limerick, has seen homelessness numbers increase by nearly 10 percent in the same timeframe.

The number of families seeking help in the Midwest has risen sharply from 29 to 50 in twelve months, while the number of children without a home in the region has almost doubled.

Clare County Council’s Homeless Action Team continues to assist those without a home in emergency accommodation, including in Westbrook, Laurel Lodge and Ashbrook.

There were 150 presentations to the team in this county between the 17th of December and 21st of January, including 30 new presentations.

That’s an increase of nearly a third in this county in just one month.
