Government On Course To Win Eviction Ban Vote Despite Clare TD Withdrawing Support

The Government is on course to win a vote on ending the eviction ban, despite confirmation from a Clare TD that she’ll be among those voting against it in the Dáil today.

Cabinet finalised measures on the counter motion to Sinn Féin’s proposal to extend the eviction ban yesterday, which the Government says will provide a “safety net” for at-risk renters from the beginning of next month.

Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien last night signaled in the Dáil that amendments by the Regional Independent Group will be accepted, a move that will secure the group’s support.

Clare TD Violet Anne Wynne has abstained from the majority of Dáil votes since the beginning of this year, as she’s been in a pairing arrangement with Minister Helen McEntee, who’s on maternity leave.

However, Deputy Wynne says she’s withdrawing from the arrangement on this occasion, because she can’t ignore a vote that could leave another family without a home.
