Clare Housing Activist Calls For National Rent Freeze

An Ennis housing activist is calling for the idea of Rent Pressure Zones to be scrapped, and replaced by a national rent freeze.

It follows figures released by the RTB, which have revealed that by the end of 2019, the average rent in Clare had risen by almost 10% in the space of a year to €752 per month.

This means Clare rents have hit a 12-year high, though this report covers the period before the COVID-19 crisis, which has seen rent in many areas drop.

Sinn Féin’s Tommy Guilfoyle, who is a member of Clare’s Housing Committee, says his party’s proposed national rent freeze must be the solution.
