Clare Councillors Vote To Maintain Higher Rate Of Property Tax For Next Two Years

Clare Councillors have voted to maintain the local property tax at the higher rate for the next two years.

Representatives have given the green light for homeowners to pay 15 percent above the standard rate, which is worth nearly €1.4 million to the Council’s coffers.

However, a reduction in rate bands set by the Government last December means many homeowners in Clare will see a drop in the amount of tax they’re paying.

Clare County Council CEO Pat Dowling told a meeting of Councillors last evening that maximising the local authority’s income was vital to maintain services, in spite of the current cost of living crisis.

 

Shannon-based Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn, who was one of three representatives to propose lowering the rate, claims people living in modest homes are being burdened by the tax.
