It's an increase on December, when they rose by 6.6 percent.
However, there was a slight drop in residential property prices during January itself, according to figures released this morning by the CSO.
And in Dublin, house prices fell by 1.2 percent in January, coming out 3.4 percent higher than the same time last year, less than half the overall national average.
House prices in Dublin are now more than a third lower (34.9 percent) than at their highest level in early 2007.
