A maternity hospital in Dublin has gone to the High Court to secure an order allowing it to withdraw life support from a baby boy with severe brain damage.

He was born by emergency caesarean section on Tuesday, and his mother died that night after being transferred to another hospital.

A late night sitting of the court heard that doctors believe the baby’s chances of survival are slim. His mother had been his sole legal guardian which meant the hospital had to go to court to get an order to withdraw life support.
