Hopes that free parking initiatives in Ennis and Kilrush will give a boost to business

Clare motorists are being urged to stay closer to home when doing their shopping, as new parking incentives come into effect in Ennis and Kilrush.

The move has been given a warm welcome by local business groups.

It sees reduced charges in Ennis and in Kilrush, in the hope that it brings more people into the town centres and away from the likes of Limerick and Galway.

In Ennis, free parking will be on offer at Council car parks on Saturdays from 2, while two hours free parking is already on offer in Kilrush.

These initiatives will be in place until September, but a more long-term approach to reducing parking charges in Ennis looks like it's on the way.

Mayor of Ennis Councillor Johnny Flynn says it's an issue that will be looked at as part of the Council's 2016 Budget, and that a process of consultation will be carried out over the coming weeks.
