Hopes Of Syrian Peace Talks Fade As Humanitarian Crisis Grows

The UN envoy to Syria is due to hold talks with the US and Russia later as hopes for a peace conference fade.

The "Geneva 2" summit had been due to take place later this month – but has been thrown in doubt because opposition leaders refuse to take part unless Assad gives assurances that he’ll stand down.

It comes as the UN’s latest report on the humanitarian crisis in Syria says that over 9 million people are now in need of urgent assistance.

That figure is up by 2.5 million on the UN’s last estimate in September.
