It’s hoped a new era of development will be unlocked in West Clare.
Úisce Éireann has submitted plans for a long awaited upgrade to Kilmihil’s Wastewater Treatment System.
Having been listed as a priority area for Uisce Éireann for several years, a wave of optimism is sweeping over the West Clare village, with hopes its legacy sewerage deficits will now be addressed.
The issue has not only blighted and stalled housing development in the locality for many years, but has also led to warnings from the Environmental Protection Agency.
In a 2024 Report, the EPA stated that without an upgrade to Kilmihil’s infrastructure, any wastewater discharges would potentially harm rivers, estuaries, lakes and coastal waters.
Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney is confident the planned works will be a gamechanger for the community.
The works proposed by Uisce Éireann will include the construction of new pumping stations and storm water holding tanks.
The utility has previously estimated the works will completed by 2030.
Retired businessman and Kilmihil resident, Gerry Johnston is hopeful it will secure investment and the futures of many generations to come.
