Hopes Inaugural Ministerial Visit Boost Shannon Airport Public Transport Links

It’s hoped the Shannon Airport Rail Link is one step closer to becoming a reality.

It follows the inaugural visit from the Minister of State for International Road Transport, Logistics, Rails and Ports Seán Canney to the Clare base yesterday, which focused on improving public transport links.

During his time at Shannon, the Minister met with CEO Mary Considine and her team to learn more about the Group’s strategic initiatives and recent developments.

The Minister was updated on progress work within the Group’s €30m investment programme which commenced in 2025, and includes airport terminal upgrades, the redevelopment of Gates 1–5, and Ireland’s first solar PV farm on airport lands—a flagship sustainability project.

The programme also features over 140,000 square foot of new R&D space at Shannon Airport Business Park, of which two units totalling 100,000 square foot are set to begin construction in late 2025.

According to the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation’s latest Aviation Report, 40% of visitors flying to Dublin end up travelling West, while Shannon Airport welcomed over 2 million passengers last year alone.

Shannon Airport Group CEO Mary Considine says this must be reflected with more accessibility.
