Turf-cutters in West Clare say they’re hopeful that a ban on turf cutting on a raised bog will be lifted, after the government eased restrictions in other areas.

Turf cutting will now be permitted on 45 bogs, including two in East Clare which had been deemed to be Natural Heritage Areas, but in West Clare at Tullaher Lough and Bog near Doonbeg the ban remains as it is classified as a Special Area of Conservation.
The plan is pending European approval, but local turf cutting campaigners are hopeful it heralds the beginning of a turn-around at Tullaher.
