‘Hope Completely Diminished’ In Rural Clare That Broadband Will Be Delivered

It’s claimed hope has completely diminished in rural parts of Clare that high-speed internet access will ever come to fruition.

The Taoiseach has said there’s no ‘cheap or easy’ alternative to the current National Broadband Plan, which is under review, after a turbulent few weeks that saw the Communications Minister step down.

That controversy has seen the plan put on hold, which has led to fears that rural Ireland will be left without connectivity for even longer.

West Clare Sinn Féin spokesperson Violet-Anne Wynne says it’s another example of rural Ireland being left on the long finger.

Meanwhile, it’s been revealed just one in seven homes in rural Ireland that have been offered high-speed broadband by Eir have taken it up.

Figures seen by the Irish Times show it’s offered to connect 200 thousand households so far this year, and of that only 28 thousand have taken up subscriptions.

The government is said to be alarmed by the low take-up levels as it considers the future of the National Broadband Plan.
