Hogan Confirms Plans For Council Cuts

A Labour Senator is calling for local councillors a be paid to full salary as the future of town councils is cast further in doubt.

The Environment Minister yesterday confirmed he plans to make radical changes to local authorities – with the number of local councils and councillors set to be significantly reduced.

Phil Hogan’s comments came at the MacGill Summer School in Glenties, though it will be the autumn before his full plans are confirmed.  

It’s understood he’s seeking to abolish 25 of the 80 town councils nationwide, and that Kilkee and Shannon Town Councils could be among those set to be hit.
