HIQA Inspectors Told Staff Would ‘Stand On Their Heads’ For Ardnacrusha Nursing Home Residents

HIQA inspectors have been told staff would ‘stand on their heads’ for residents of a South East Clare nursing home.

The findings are contained in a report published this week after an inspection in the Riverdale House Nursing Home in Ardnacrusha.

The unannounced inspection took place on the 11th of October last year, when 26 residents were on the premises.

Residents told the inspector on the day that staff were ‘lovely’ and ‘very attentive’ and it was noted the centre was particularly clean and well maintained.

One resident commented staff would ‘stand on their heads’ to meet residents’ needs.

The report stated the home had just emerged from a COVID-19 outbreak just nine days prior, during which three residents sadly passed away.

The inspector noted there was a ‘familiar and comfortable’ relationship between staff and residents and that ‘a relaxed atmosphere was evident’.

Residents spoken to noted their happiness with visiting restrictions having been eased in line with government guidance at the time.

Of the 15 areas the Riverdale House Nursing Home was assessed in on the day, it was deemed at least substantially compliant in 13 of those areas.

The two areas it was not compliant in were training and staff development and individual care plan assessments, with a new computerised documentation system set to assist in that regard in the future.
