A HIQA inspection on a West Clare nursing home deemed it to be in a ‘poor state of repair’ at the time the inspection took place.
The findings were documented this week following an inspection at Kilrush District Hospital on the Cooraclare Road.
The unannounced inspection took place on the 29th of June last, when 31 residents were on the premises.
Inspectors noted ‘overall feedback was positive’ from the residents of the centre, with personal care being delivered at an ‘acceptable standard’.
However, HIQA personnel observed ‘many parts of the centre’ to be in a poor state, with parts of the main kitchen being described as ‘visibly unclean’ and some bedroom furniture in a ‘poor state of repair’.
There was also criticism for a lack of activities being undertaken with residents, with it being described as limited to ‘mostly exercise and bingo’.
Health inspectors say action was required by the facility in the areas of governance and management, records, infection prevention and control, the premises, food and nutrition, and resident’s rights, to ensure regulatory compliance.
Kilrush District Hospital was deemed non-compliant in four of the 12 areas it was assessed in, substantially compliant in five of them, and fully compliant in the other three, which were healthcare, staffing and visits.
The facility has outlined a number of steps it has taken to address the issues raised in the report, including day-to-day audits, and an upgrading of infrastructure including new flooring and replacing worn mattresses.
