University Hospital Limerick was one of three hospitals which the Health watchdog says are not adequately assessing patient's nutrition levels.

Overall this latest HIQA report was complementary about progress made at University Hospital Limerick, but a number of areas were highlighted for improvement.

This includes the introduction of weekly re-screening of patients and review timing of meals on some wards.

Areas that worked well, included the establishment of a Nutrition Food and Hydration Committee that plays a key role in raising the importance of providing good nutrition and hydration care across the hospital.

Patients are routinely screened for the risk of malnutrition within 24 hours of admission to hospital and patient screening was implemented on all wards.

In a statement to Clare FM, UHL's Chief Operations Officer says huge strides have been taken at University Hospital Limerick to ensure that patient’s nutrition and hydration needs are met while in care.

Noreen Spillane says the areas for improvement outlined in the report have been noted and the Nutrition, Food and Hydration Committee will be working to ensure that these are implemented as part of their ongoing work.
