Ennis General Hospital has fared well in a HIQA insepection focussing on cleanliness and hygiene.
While some issues were highlighted, the county hospital has rated better than other facilities assessed in the latest round of reports.
The report published this afternoon by HIQA follows an unannounced inspection of Ennis General on September 4th last.
Officials assessed the Fergus and Burren Wards, both of which are in the new 50-bed state of the art facility which opened late last year.
The physical environment in both wards was deemed very clean, with few exceptions, and the report states this protected people’s dignity and privacy as well as reducing the spread of infections.
Regarding hand hygiene, inspectors found that while training in this area is madatory, and that regular audits are undertaken, four of a fourteen potential hygiene opportunities were missed.
The hospital has been told to develop a quality improvement plan to bring it fully in line with national standards, and to install more hand gels in certain areas.
The report into Ennis is one of five published today, and Clare’s hospital is the best performing of the group.
Areas of at Tallght Hospital and the Mater Hospital were found to be generally unclean, with other concerns at Nenagh General Hospital and at St. Vincent’s.
