Clare saw one of the highest rates of complaint to the office of the language commissioner last year.

There were just over 700 reports of improper use of the Irish language last year, and 4.5% or 32 of these came from Clare.

This is the fifth highest of any county in Ireland, and more than Donegal despite its bigger population and the fact that it has a Gaeltacht.

The annual report from the office of the language commissioner also criticies local authorities and finds that the majority of them, including Clare County Council, are not fully compliant with language legislation.
