High Ranking Clareman Who Died In Irish War Of Independence To Be Remembered

The highest ranking officer killed in Clare during the War of Independence is to be commemorated this weekend, a century on from his death.

Vice-Commandant of the Mid Clare Brigade Martin Devitt, from Cahersherkin near Ennistymon, was shot dead during a shoot-out with the Royal Irish Constabulary on February 24th, 1920.

Members of the Devitt family will attend the public commemoration in Ennistymon on Sunday, as will former TD and Minister Mary O’Rourke, with music from Sharon Shannon.
