Higgins Convenes Council Of State To Discuss Asylum Seekers Bill

The Council of State is meeting today to consider the International Protection Bill, and whether it breaches the constitution.

President Michael D Higgins will ask the Council for advice on three aspects the bill, which aims to simplify the application process for asylum seekers.

These are the grounds under which the state can block the reunion of families, the constitutional rights of children and the deportation process.

The bill was rushed through the Oireachtas, despite criticism from Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara.
