Islamic State fighters have entered the ruins of Palmyra, after overnight fighting saw them take complete control there.

Palmyra is a World Heritage Site, which includes 2,000-year-old temples and colonnaded streets, though the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says there has been no destruction there so far.

Former Clare FM presenter Caimin Jones visited Palmyra a number of years ago and says it would be a great shame if its beauty was to be lost.
