Ahead of the June Bank Holiday, UL Hospitals Group is asking for the public’s assistance in ensuring the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick remains free for those in need of urgent medical attention.

ULHG say that a significant number of people have presented at the ED this year who could have been treated at Injury Units, family doctors, out-of-hours GP services or pharmacies.

The hospital say they will continue to prioritise patients who require immediate treatment and are warning that patients who attend for routine or non-urgent care may experience very long wait times over the holiday weekend and into next week.

UL Hospitals Group regrets this delay, and is asking the public to help our staff at this challenging time.

Anyone who is seriously ill or in need of emergency care is advised not delay in attending the ED, but those with more minor injuries and ailments are encouraged to consider all the options, including the Injury Units at Ennis, Nenagh and St John’s, Hospitals.

Significant reductions in scheduled care remain in effect at the region’s main hospital today, due to the high volume of patients attending the Emergency Department.

All but time-critical elective activity was deferred for the past three days and while outpatient activity at University Hospital Limerick is restored, almost all elective surgical procedures and diagnostic investigations are deferred for the remainder of this week.
