A North Clare nursing home has been criticised by the health watchdog for having admitted residents for up to two days before implementing a care plan for them.

St Dominic Savio Nursing Home, near Liscannor, has also been found to be in breach of fire safety regulations, as Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry reports:

There were 26 residents in place at St Dominic Savio Nursing Home during the unannounced inspection last March.

The centre, operated by Smith Hall Ltd, has capacity for 28 and caters for older persons.

HIQA inspectors noted issues with their individual assessments and care plans.

It was found that no nursing assessments had been completed on admission for some residents and that care plans had not been developed within 48 hours after admission.

In response, management said every effort would be made to ensure such assessments are carried out within the specified timeframe.

Fire safety precautions were also criticised, as the nursing home was found not to have any evacuation drills carried out, while smoke seals on doors showed gaps when closed.

Since the inspection, drills have been implemented for all residents and the doors repaired.
