HIQA Raises Concerns Abuse Claims Not Investigated In ‘Full & Thorough’ Way At East Clare Nursing Home

Health inspectors have raised concerns that abuse claims at an East Clare nursing home were not investigated in a ‘full and thorough’ way.

A HIQA inspector who assessed the Lakes Nursing Home in Killaloe earlier this year has stated systems in place to protect residents from abuse require further review.

The unannounced inspection took place on the 18th of May this year, and 50 residents were present in the Lakes Nursing Home on the day.

HIQA’s report states that the feedback from residents was that staff at the facility were kind and caring, with interactions between staff and residents deemed to be appropriate and respectful.

The inspection noted attempts to deliver a ‘high standard’ of care, though noted the high turnover of staff in the home impacted employees’ ability to deliver on that.

Records at the facility show while allegations of abuse were investigated, the inspector wasn’t satisfied the Lakes’ own policy of safeguarding was fully adhered to.

HIQA said this required a review from the home.

In response, the facility committed to organising more safeguarding workshops for its staff.

Management also said the designated person in charge at the facility will ensure any and all abuse allegations will be thoroughly investigated in accordance with its own policies and procedures in the future.

Overall, of the 17 regulations the East Clare facility was assessed under, it was found to be at least substantially compliant in 13 of those areas.
