HIQA To Inspect UHL Emergency Department Due To Ongoing Overcrowding Concerns

HIQA is to inspect the emergency department at the region’s main hospital following repeated high overcrowding levels at the facility.

It’s understood health inspectors are to begin work with senior management within the UL Hospitals Group to develop a strategic plan to address issues at University Hospital Limerick.

The Dooradoyle facility has consistently been the most overcrowded in the country for a number of years, with 76,000 attendances in 2021 – up 16 percent compared to 2020 and 7 percent on 2019.
