Day surgeries are resuming at Ennis hospital.

Earlier this week, Clare FM revealed that over 30 surgeries scheduled for the county hospital had been deferred, some at short notice, even though the patients concerned had been self-isolating in advance of their hospital stays.

Now, the UL Hospitals group has confirmed that some procedures were rescheduled for both yesterday and today, although day surgery remains at reduced capacity owing to COVID-19.

The changes at Ennis came after a significant surge in trauma and emergency cases at University Hospital Limerick, which required staff at Ennis to be redeployed to deal with the increase.

The Hospitals Group insists that it remains committed to utilising theatres at Ennis General and that any speculation about the future of theatres there is entirely without foundation.
