Concern In Clare About Political Resistance To Tackling Drinking Problem

An Ennis addiction counsellor fears there is political resistance to tackling Ireland’s drinking problem.

It comes as the 2019 Drinkaware Index report has found that 19 percent of Irish people exceed binge-drinking levels on a typical drinking session.

In addition, 74 percent of people believe that drinking “is just a part of Irish culture” while over a third of under-25s report binge drinking on a weekly basis.

Team Leader at Bushy Park Treatment Centre in Ennis Gerry Murphy has been telling Clare FM’s James Mulhall that it’s been ingrained in our society for generations.
