Claims Family Carers “Exploited” As Dáil Protest Is Mounted

It’s claimed family carers in Clare and across the country are being “exploited” by the government.

The stark warning comes as Ennis-based organisation Family Carers Ireland has been staging a protest outside the Dáil, calling on the government to recognise the struggles for those caring for a loved one.

Despite increasing the hours that a family carer can work or study from 15 to 18.5 a week, Budget 2020 saw no increase in the income disregard for Carer’s Allowance.

Carers have taken it in turns to demonstrate in a cage outside Leinster House, which they say represents the feeling of entrapment in their sector.

Head of Communications with Family Carers Ireland Catherine Cox has been speaking with Clare FM’s James Mulhall from that protest – she says there’s a postcode lottery in operation.
