The National Inpatient Experience Survey 2022 reflects the experiences of patients admitted to a public hospital this May and who spent more than 24 hours in such a facility.

Over 920 patients provided feedback on University Hospital Limerick, Ennis Hospital, Nenagh Hospital, St John’s Hospital and Croom Orthopaedic Hospital.

Overall, 77% of patients described their experience within the UL Hospitals Group as a whole, as good or very good.

71% of patients at University Hospital Limerick were satisfied with the care they received, while 87% of attendees at Ennis Hospital reported positive experiences.

These ratings compare to a national satisfaction rate of 82%.

Across the five hospitals within ULHG, 79% of patients said they always had trust and confidence in the staff treating them.

UHL says hospitals with a higher proportion of patients admitted through the Emergency Department are more likely to have lower levels of patient satisfaction and promises that feedback in the survey, including in relation to long waits for admission, will be acted upon.

Ennis Hospital says a quality improvement has been formulated responding to the survey results and focuses on improved communication with patients, providing better information on the discharge process and on medication safety initiatives.
