Over 1,500 patients were waiting more than a year and a half to see a Consultant at Ennis General and University Hospital Limerick at the end of August.

However, the latest figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund show a marginal decline in overall waiting lists at the Midwest facilities.

A total of 33,189 patients were waiting for inpatient and outpatient appointments at UHL or Ennis General in August.

However, the latest report from the NTPF shows the number of people waiting 18 months or more too see a consultant remains on a downward trajectory.

At Dooradoyle, 1,414 adults were waiting over a year and a half to be called, in addition to 148 children, meaning 618 patients were cleared from the lengthiest backlog at UHL last month.

In Ennis, the number of adults waiting 18 months or more also fell significantly , from 9 patients to 3, while the number of children on a waiting list for this period stayed at zero for the second month in a row.

Although Ennis saw some improvements in its lists, the number of patients waiting over a year for cardiology appointments rose by 19% in August to 120.

At UHL meanwhile the majority of patients waiting an extended period were in line for consultants in the disciplines of dermatology and ear, nose and throat services.
