Health officials are warning about the importance of hand-washing following an outbreak of E-coli in the Midwest.
There have been 20 confirmed cases of Verotoxigenic E. Coli, or VTEC, over the past 4 weeks, which resulted in a number of people being hospitalised.

The bacteria can cause stomach pains and diarrhoea and in severe cases can cause a serious condition known as HUS which results in the breakdown of red blood cells and kidney failure.
The Department of Public Health Mid-West is emphasising the importance of the effective treatment of private well water and of washing hands.
