The Health Minister has dismissed a call from Clare County Council that the BreastCheck screening service be extended to younger women.

In a letter seen by Clare FM, Minister Leo Varadkar has outlined how free mammograms are currently offered to women aged from 50 to 64, and that this is now being extended to women up to the age of 69.
The Council had passed a motion urging for BreastCheck to be extended to women from the age of 35, but Minister Varadkar says international evidence does not support this.
His letter has stressed that any women with concerns about cancer should consult with their GP, but Ennis-area Councillor and Independent General Election candidate Ann Norton says this option is far too expensive for many.
