Health inspectors say they were ‘not assured’ of a system in place for the protection of residents at a South East Clare nursing home.
The findings were documented this week following an inspection at the Ennis Road Care Facility in Meelick earlier this year.
The unannounced inspection took place on the 25th of July last, when 64 residents were present on the premises.
Inspectors noted residents generally ‘enjoyed a good quality of life’ at the centre, with a ‘warm and relaxed’ atmosphere in place.
However, HIQA’s report goes on to criticise governance and management at the facility, noting that ‘information requested’ for the inspection was not ‘provided in a timely manner’, while claiming the nursing home’s risk management system ‘failed to ensure that resident safety was effectively managed’.
There was also criticism towards protection of residents, with one ‘potential safeguarding incident’ deemed to have resulted in ‘no action’ being taken by staff to ensure that particular resident’s safety.
However, staff were documented as being ‘kind and respectful’ in all interactions observed by inspectors, while it was noted residents’ social care needs were also being met.
Overall, the Meelick facility was deemed non-compliant in 4 of the twelve areas it was assessed in, substantially compliant in 3 areas and fully compliant in the other 5.
The facility has outlined a number of steps it has taken to address the issues raised in the report, including additional staffing, a centralised action plan, and further safeguarding training.
