Harty Fears Winter Overcrowding

Clare's Independent TD fears the worst for the overcrowding situation at the region's main hospital this winter.

UL Hospitals Group plans to introduce a bed bureau from next month, which would see GPs deal with a centralised point of contact when deciding whether to refer patients to the ED in Limerick or the MAU in Ennis.

It's hoped the move will help to ease the situation at University Hospital Limerick but Dr Michael Harty claims the plan takes away the GP's ability to liaise directly with senior clinical staff and would be bad for patients here.

The Dooradoyle facility has been suffering from the highest levels of overcrowding in the country since Monday last week and Dr Harty says he doesn't see the situation improving over the coming months:
