The Department of Education says it’s “anticipated that demand for primary teachers over the next number of years will exceed previous expectations.”
The Department of Education has this week announced the approval of 610 extra college places for primary school teachers.
320 will come on stream in 2023, and the remaining 290 in 2024.
The extra places will be available at Mary Immaculate College Limerick, DCU, Marino Institute of Education and Maynooth University.
Assistant Principal of CBS Primary School in Ennis, Colm Davoren believes that on the whole it’s a positive development, but he has some concerns.
Hope has been expressed that the additional places may help to bring CAO points for the teaching courses down and act as an incentive for more students to chose teaching as a career.
Principal of Gaelscoil Mhichíl Cíosóg, Donal Ó hÁiniféin says an increased class numbers has meant it’s never been more important to increase teacher numbers.
