Clare County Council has granted planning permission for the demolition of three residential units, office blocks and ancillary buildings between the Clare Road and Toberteascain, to make way for a new neighbourhood centre.

It will include a licenced discount foodstore incorporating an off-licence area, which will be operated by LIDL, as well retail and office units and a childcare unit.

There will also be a public playground, car parking and cycle parking.

Announcing their plans for the development last March, LIDL Ireland said that up to 25 jobs will be created with the opening of the new store, with further roles coming on stream once the additional commercial units open.

A number of submissions have been lodged against the development, including from businesses such as Tesco and RGDATA.

The neighbourhood centre, which is subject to 21 conditions, can now be appealed to An Bord Pleanala.
